Then again, maybe that's one of those things I learned from the prissy ladies. The dictionary definition is "kind and thoughtful behavior toward another," and it seems like that ought to come naturally, and not have to be taught. ![]() Which isn't just a set of rules written in books by prissy ladies and memorized by reluctant children who forget it as soon as the prissy ladies go away. ![]() Whew! Excuse me one more time!īut Dolores isn't talking about etiquette. There are political correctness and sexual harassment and relationship categories that previous generations never imagined. Since life overall is more complicated, maybe courtesy is not a "very simple act" at all anymore.Įtiquette must be applied to many new areas cell phones and e-mail and crowded highways and long waiting lines. There's much more knowledge to teach in school than there used to be the class period in which manners were once taught is now taken up with some sort of necessary 21st-century technology. She lists gifts unacknowledged, phone calls unreturned, "a simple 'thank you' for doing acts of kindness." She doesn't expect displays of gratitude for every good deed, she said, but "it sure is nice to receive a kind 'thank you' once in a while."Īnd yet, there are a great many people crowding and shoving on this planet now, and they have a great many matters on their minds. ![]() She's starting to believe the whole idea of acceptable behavior "is going by the wayside" and she asks, "Whatever happened to 'please' and 'thank you'?"Īlthough everybody has a favorite peeve about good and bad manners, Dolores is most concerned with verbal gestures a seemingly easy effort. She thinks we need to think about "the very simple act of courtesy." EXCUSE me, please, but a letter from Dolores LaPoma of Edmond has to do with manners.
